Sea Lion Island. South of mainland east Falkland Island. FALKLAND ISLANDS.
RANGE: Circumpolar, found in most Subantarctic islands including South Georgia. Some breeding populations are also found on the southern South American coasts of Tierra del Fuego and north to Punta Norte on the Argentine coast.
They are the largest of all the seal species with an adult male reaching 18ft or 6 meters and weighing 3.5 tons. Females are smaller 10-12 ft or 3.4 - 3.9 meters and about 1/4 of the weight. Colour varies according to moult. When first ashore they are golden brown but when newly mounted they are grey. At birth the pup is black. A distinctive feature of the males is their inflatable proboscis. The adult bulls also have deep scarring as a result to fighting. Four flippers are small in relation to body size.
When females come ashore to give birth they form harems which vary in size and are attended by one bull. The pups are born in mid October and weight 80-90 lbs at birth and 4 ft in length. They are fed for about 23 days and by the time they are weened they weigh up to 400lbs or 180 kgs. Diet is composed to squid and fish. Their only known natural enermies are killer whales and leopard seals. Sea Lion Island holds 95% of the Falklands elephant seals
